And yes, Tab certainly intended the irony, and it’s interesting when one finally realizes/notices it. I thought it was pretty neat, but then, I just read the comic for the first time about three weeks ago.

I like the name Moonbeam, too, but that doesn’t mean Tom does.

I am sure Tab is well aware of the irony behind Charlie’s last name,
I made that comment to point it out to other people because I made
the realization and maybe someone else would comment and say
they did, too. Then they all misunderstood what I wrote. People
can be jumpy about those things and I don’t blame them. And I
agree with you about that. Charlie was assigned male at birth, but
she has always been and always will be a girl no matter what body
she is in. I believe there is no exact term or way to describe it.
Everybody is different.

As for what you’re to do about it – honestly, being aware of it makes you further ahead than most. It can be simple things, such as asking people not to make t-word jokes because you find them offensive and not judging people because they look like they might be trans*. If you act away from the norm when it comes to society’s treatment of trans* people you will be noticed by them and they’ll know they can trust you. It can also be wider, such as actively campaigning for trans* rights or educating others.

In terms of the “truly a guy” thing, I think it would be better perhaps to just say that Charlie was assigned male at birth or that she currently has a male anatomy. I personally prefer the former. Many people consider “guy” to be a gender, not a sex, so inside or outside, Charlie would not be considered a guy because she does not identify as one. But I definitely get what you were saying. It’s just that so many trans people have different ways of saying things and certain ways are offensive to some of us. I know a couple of years back if someone said I was “truly a girl on the outside” I would have been very mad and hurt (simultaneously). I actually fully embrace the fact that I was assigned female at birth these days, and at this point wouldn’t care much about that statement being said in reference to me if I knew the meaning was the same as “assigned female at birth” or “has a female anatomy,” but there are definitely trans people who would take offense and that’s definitely valid I think. But again, just my opinion.
