First comment on this one, I do believe. Anyways, I’m just wondering now what Jamie’s coworker meant by, ‘His tastes run darker than you think’, in Charlie’s story. I mean, he can’t have gone to the Alternative cafe because he has those tastes, as we already know, so did he develop them because of the cafe? Any help clarifying it, please???

“despite her protests that she only wanted what was best for me, my mother only ever cared about herself and what she would get out of things”
So Jamie’s mom is saying that she only wants what’s best for him, but Jamie has finally realized that it’s all bullshit and she only cares about herself.
That’s a comma at the end of that third box–the full sentence reads “All the fights made me realize that despite her protests that she only wanted what was best for me, my mother only ever cared for herself and what she would get out of things.” I was a bit confused, too–I read it too fast! That’ll teach me.
It’s good that Jamie’s recognizing that now, though, even if it’s a pretty heartbreaking thing to realize about your mom. Poor kid.
He’s still under 18, right? So even if he qualified for student loans, which usually depend on his parents’ finances–and his mom could be making bank in child support for all we know, since Jamie probably doesn’t–even if he qualified, he might not be able to live in a dorm yet.
Since, because of his age, he would probably need parental consent, and like hell his mom’s gonna give that if she’s going to be making money off of him living with her!
Dunno if any of this applies in the UK, though it would make sense using the logic behind USA laws regarding minority.
No, you are right. ‘College’ in the UK is essentially the last 2 years of high school. You can do A Levels at a traditional school, or o to a college which is only for 16+ and will usually let you do a range of either vocational or academic qualifications, including A Levels.
Yes, he could, if he was going to university. Sadly for Jamie, he’s got a long way to go before that happens. The UK system of education is very different from the USA. Jamie has just finished his GCSEs, the lowest level of qualification a person can get, and he’s going to a sixth-form college to study A-Levels, which are the stepping-stone to going to university. He’s around 16 right now, so even though he could technically live on his own or at college if it had dorms for international students (as Chichester and Peter Symonds do), without a job and welfare support from the government, that is not going to happen. Since he’s living at home and a student, he can’t get welfare, so unless he calls Social Services about his mother (a very out-of-character thing to do), he is really going to need that job.
In the UK things work differentt when you hit sixteen. If you hit sixteen before the school year that started September 2010 you may be entitled to EMA – education maintenance allowance, depending on the income of your household. That’s worth £30 a week. If your sixteen after the mentioned day you may be entitled to a bursary of £20 a week, again depending on your families income.
Oh god, the endless, you need experience to get a job, you need a job to get experience cycle… I’m currently in the middle of that myself D: Wonderful work as ever, Tab. :3
Yeah – Jamie is in the 16-18 range; too young for college support but too old to be a parental dependant. A lot of folks I know who live with their parents pay their parents rent – but they’re all over 18 so they can apply for social security and proper jobs and stuff.
Fun fact – they recently cancelled EMA (support for kids doing A-levels) in the UK. That would have been the only money people in Jamie’s situation could have applied for, and the government has decided they can no longer afford to supply it …
[Very much looking forward to the next incentive ;p ]
Slight correction: the EMA was actually just cancelled in England (I still get it as a Welsh student because the Welsh government funds it, though I don’t know about the rest of the UK), and it’s for any 16-18 year old who has gone on to further education, not just those doing A levels.
Depending on when this is set, Jamie’s mum may have been able to apply for Jamie to get EMA. I assume they’re stretched for cash, so he would have got it. Unless she’s just a bitch.
Since Jamie is the one narrating, and he’s used imperfect grammar in the past, we can probably assume that it was intentional as a part of his speech patterns.
Or possibly it was a typo! NOBODY KNOWS, oooOOOooo~
I have to say..This comic is freaking awesome. I seriously just read it all in one day, and I’m super sad that I reached the end of what there is so far. The story is very good and just kind of sucks the reader in. Being one of those people who has always been “different”, I’m kind of envious of the characters and the bonds they have.
Did anyone else notice we actually saw (half) of Jamie’s mom’s face? Do you think it’s because he’s starting to realize how horrible she really is to him? Like he’s starting to see her true self? Oh, the symbolism!
Maybe others have figured this out long before me but perhaps the reason that Jamie feels the need to break up with Charlie is so that she isn’t subjected to his judgemental mother? Just a thought.
The first page of Jamie’s story says he’s “about to leave” the only girl he’s ever loved. “Leave” might just mean “go far away for a long time but not actually break up”. Like, to university or something.
I am holding out hope that it’s something like this and not an actual breakup. Ending the entire series on a breakup would be a terrible thing, when all the other stories ended so much more positively.
Lovely work as always! Can’t wait for the next page, but looking forward to seeing you guys at the SFX weekender even more! It’s very likely I shall be either Random Sith Lord or a Dementor wandering the event
I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned yet, but I think it’s so awesome that Jamie didn’t even tell his friends about what he was going through, that they just thought he was saving up for something. Awesome in a narrative, great character development kind of way, obviously… not awesome in that he probably has huge issues reaching out, which I can empathize with.
Urgh. That look on Jamie’s mom’s face seems so snotty in an “I’m above you” way.
The logic of you need experience to work but you need to work to get experience is pretty prevalent and sucks. Lucky he landed this part time job.

The drawing of Jamie is amazing in the last box. He’s so hopeful and adorable, I want to cuddle him forever!
Exactly what I was thinking. ^^
Poor Tab, feel better soon. :<
Thirded. He doesn’t look happy often enough! Seeing him smile like that is so awesome.
I know, right! He looks amazing! That expression!
“she only wanted what was best for me”
“only ever cared for herself and what she would get out of things”
um
kinda contradictory
unless i’m reading it wrong :\
A lot of times victims of abusers will have that sort of contradictory mentality.

Did anyone else think that the lady in the middle panel was Steve for a second?
It’s sad how surprised he is someone is willing to help him or care
Do student loans not exist in the UK or something? Couldn’t Jamie get some aid and live in a dorm?

Except I think “college” is High School in the UK… so there aren’t any dorms. I don’t think. ^^;
Poor Jamie.
…Or not. Never mind. I have no idea what I’m talking about. xD

She is such a skank even till the end. .-.

I love The way you drew Jamies face on the last panel! no matter what country your from finding a job is nearly impossible!
LMFAO omg the barista woman’s posture kinda reminds me of me when I come home from school and sit in front of my computer for years.
*An alternative…sorry. Grammar Nazi.

Thank you! I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw that
Please, before this comic ends, let someone, ANYONE, push Jamie’s mom down a peg. The woman needs a frickin’ reality check.

oh, i just realized that we saw half of it on the last page too. Oh well, the point still stands!
Yes, I think it’s because he’s beginning to “see” her, which is to say, understand her in all her true malevolence.
Maybe others have figured this out long before me but perhaps the reason that Jamie feels the need to break up with Charlie is so that she isn’t subjected to his judgemental mother? Just a thought.

On the down side if your theory is true, his mother could me forcing him to join the military…
