Yes, because even if it’s a fictional character, someone else’s suffering and paranoia should be plastered all over the front of your computer.

So, what, your one of those disney obsessed-must-have-happy-endings-and-flowers-on-everything-life-is-beautiful people?

Come on, suffering is part of art. Sometimes the most beautiful part, because we relate, we deal, we process, and we move with the character. I think the top panel captures dread beautifully.

Coming in through the forum I expected something completely different. How is ‘cunt’ misogynist? People call anyone that, and for pretty much any reason. If nothing else can be said for that word… it’s quite universal.

    • kathlynn
      kathlynn

probably because cunt is female anatomy. and I think the usage might very depending on where you are/ who you are around. I do not often here guys getting called a cunt, myself.
I have to agree with jamie on this his mom is a cunt.
it’s like any slang word, some times it’s missused and bad to say, others it’s well deserved, and a okay in my books.

    • SolitareLee
      SolitareLee

It’s called misogynist because, in American culture at least (although I’ve heard it’s different in the UK where the comic it set), it’s the worst thing you can call a woman… why is it the worst thing you can call a woman? Because “cunts” are the worst word for what is considered the “worst” part of women by misogynists. It’s only insulting if you think being or having a vagina is disgusting. It works as an insult through the power of hating women and their anatomy.

      • Anteatereatingant
        Anteatereatingant

It’s calling someone a piece of genitalia, it’s hardly going to be a compliment lol. Your hair looks nice today… like a ball bag!
But no, where I live it’s used pretty equally for both genders (and slow computers)
If in the US it’s only directed at women, and usually describing something only women are insulted for (like slut) then it would be misogynist, and I can see the logic behind this particular word filling that niche.

        • SolitareLee
          SolitareLee

Yeah, it is. Previous uses of “cunt” in comic have brought up how very differently it’s used in the US vs the UK.

        • Will

I’ve never gotten this completely. I’ve heard the insults “jigalo” and “dick” thrown around my friend group so much.

Dick is an insult, and that is mostly accepted, but cunt is BAD! Sigh…I love women, in fact I’m transsexual, so I kind of want to be a woman…and even I think that some of this “mysogynist” stuff is far-fetched and dumb. Especially when it tells someone they are successful with their jibes.

All my gay friends use the word “fag” but it’s not as bad when they do it as when some homophobic bastard does because of HOW the homophobic bastard does it, and what he actually means when he says it.

This is true of most words, there are some exceptions. I think the big difference is every put upon culture in america wants THEIR nasty word.

Your explanation works, but it’s not as bad as other words. Like the big N Word we all know, which means less than human. Or calling someone a fag or faggot, which is referring to the type of wood used for burning suggesting that is what they are good for.

Cunt isn’t directly cognitive to such contexts. It’s just like dick in that it’s just a nasty word for a particular area of anatomy. It’s used as a vulgar send off in a sad attempt to be shocking most of the time.

Here it is used most appropriately.

Which, in itself, is a bullshit double standard, as women call men “dicks” and “dickheads” like its going out of style over here and nobody bats a fucking eye. Its absolutely ridiculous, and completely arrogant, especially when they have the gall to get upset when the tables are turned and someone calls them a cunt or a twat.

I actually call both men and women cunts (and occasionally twats). Mostly to attack the overuse of the word “dick” as an insult, but mostly because the word cunt is hilarious.

From what I’ve heard, and seen in UK culture, cunt is every other word in a sentence.

Also Jamie’s mom rightfully deserves to be called a cunt. Because she is.

        • Anteatereatingant
          Anteatereatingant

Haha Not quite every other word… not since we stopped using Windows 2000. Boom.
(does that work, idk I have a mac, I hear they used to freeze up a lot)
But tbh it’s natural for genitals to be insults, they’re taboo for good reason and lets face it, can be quite disgusting.
So when you say: “It’s only insulting if you think being or having a vagina is disgusting.”
It’d be very weird not to think of being a vagina as insulting!

As an American, I can say that “c*nt” seems to be much, much, much less insulting to British culture than it is to my own. So my entire comment here will be about how that word is perceived in American culture.

When men call women a “c*nt”, it’s not offensive because it’s disgusting; it’s offensive because it reduces women to purposes of sexual gratification for straight men. It basically says to women: “you are not a full human being, and I only care about you to the extent that you have this part of you that I want to put my penis into, after which I will discard you”.

I’m not sure how these various offensive terms translate into British culture, but “c*nt” is about the same level of offense as “n*gger”, “faggot”, and k*ke.” (Except it seems to be that “faggot” is tossed around fairly freely among gay men and some friends of gay men here.)

          • Skylan2021
            Skylan2021

I dunno about TJ in Baltimore, but Im an American and I have to disagree. I dont think calling a woman a cunt has anything to do with devaluing or reducing them to anything or whatever. You call someone (or something) a cunt cuz its being a cunt. Under what circumstances does someone become a cunt? I cant answer that. There are a lot of words that in the past have been filled with hate and used improperly to hurt other people. Words like nigger, faggot, and cunt (among others) are generally just tossed around these days without even applying to their previous meanings (I was going to censor these words, but unless there is a computer censor on this board I dont see the point, you all know what the words are so Im just taking the responsibility of using them to get my point across, it seems legit). Some of these words are just words, and a lot of them dont even have any real meaning anymore because they are used so casually. Men dont call women cunts to reduce them or anything, and I assume women dont have any likewise intention by calling men dicks. You just say them because theyre words where we understand the CONTEXT. I think we’ve gotten to a time where words are starting to lose applicable meaning, and starting to gain context. You cant just point at one individual thing anymore and label it. You call someone a cunt cuz theyre being a cunt. What does that mean? I dunno exactly, but we just understand it. I dont have any interest in tracing down a words origins, language isnt 2-dimensional like that.

That’s a level of deep I wouldn’t have expected from the colonials (I’m joking… I’m not. No really I am. Or am I… I am, I love you guys. Grid systems, what an idea!)
Going from attacking someones laziness or stupidity by causing them the quite understandable offense of being compared to a piece of genitalia, and all women being reduced to the base use of their genitals is the sort of leap I’m sure I’d need to be a few pints down to buy into, but I’m sure it makes sense to you guys.

It isn’t a double standard in the way you think it is. People get called dicks because it is a mild insult. Nobody really thinks dicks are bad. But there is a cultural hatred of female bodies that you are reinforcing by calling people “cunts.” Congrats on being a misogynist?

          • The Herniator
            The Herniator

Shaed, don’t call someone a misogynist who you know nothing about. Especially when you’ve seen them explain their positions very openly.
And *especially* when explaining in that self-same post that it’s all subjective and based on intent.
You really don’t think no one sees dicks as bad? why is being compared to one unfavorable? And isn’t constantly comparing people to them in a negative way contributing to them being seen as bad?
It might not be as endemic, but the whole “Men do it to us so we’ll do it to them… and still complain when men do it to us” thing has never made any kind of sense and calling it a double standard is definitely justified.

          • The Herniator
            The Herniator

I’m just saying. Calling someone a mysoginist is a serious accusation (perhaps not taken as seriously as it should be) and you shouldn’t throw it at someone who’s shown absolutely no hatred or irrational anger towards women. All he’s displayed is logic which you think is flawed.

          • P
            P

I don’t necessarily agree that the person is a misogynist, but I do agree that dick and cunt are two very different things in the US… People are so quick to think that everything is equivalent without considering the surrounding cultural context… But the fact is, “dick” is an incredibly light insult and actually acknowledging a certain level of power. It’s phallic… and phallic things are about more than just the physical genitalia, they’re about expressing masculinity and the traits associated with it: power, wealth, aggression. When you call someone a dick, you’re insulting them, but you’re doing it in a way that puts them on equal terms with you. When you call someone a cunt (which, by the way, often goes hand-in-hand with adjectives like “filthy” or “stupid”), it’s degrading because there’s no history of cunts being a good thing. It not only insults that person, but adds to the idea of vaginas as filthy and gross, which I don’t think is the case with dick.

        • kathlynn
          kathlynn

I completely agree with you, I wanted to post this in my, but wasn’t sure how to phrase it. it should not be ok for one gender to be called a dick, but the others flip out over cunt. I als agree with you on the implications of the terminology.
might it amuse you that I rarely call anyone (male or female) a dick, rather I usually call them an ‘ass’ or ‘asshole’ (which still isn’t the greatest thing, but it’s also not gender specific). ;)

        • Gourdboy
          Gourdboy

In my observations of the use of the usage of genitilia based insults it seems that the actions which provoked your ire factor into choice of terminology. For instance if someone is violating a person’s rights or cofort zone(whatever) the tendancy of the victim is to call them a dick or something along those lines. The intrusive nature of their actions seems to elicit a connection with the instrument of penetration in sexual intercourse(the phallus) and since it is an unwelcome intrusion it equates to calling someone a rapist. Slurs based on female genitilia on the other hand seem to me to be of a more insidious nature as they appear to be based upon victimhood as a basis for insult (the penetrated). Calling someone a cunt generally carries connotations of uselessness, impotence, spiteful victimhood and dirtyness. Whereas calling someone a dick generally carries connotations of aggression, inconsiderateness and immunity to restraint. I do not view any of these traits as desireable, or either term as more insulting in and of itself. It is the weight of a strongly male biased society which makes cunt a worse insult in some cultures. And imho both penises and vaginas are beautiful things which give us much pleasure and ensure the propogation of our(perhaps doomed) species. Maybe its time we stopped hating on ourselves and got busy on creating some insults which will lead to something other than generations of self loathing by people who are not strong enough to see the beauty in what humanity has.

Except, when I’ve heard someone use the word cunt towards a woman, they are often furious that the woman has one upped them. I’ve also known a few women who take it as a compliment in these situations, which I love, because it increases the ire of the offended party, who rightly deserves it.

On the other hand these women could call them misogynists and get offended, and thus end up making them know they have succeeded.

I’ve also heard plenty of women refer to other women as “cunts” usually as a reference to them being negatively viewed as sluts. If it was positive they would call them “slut” which is increasingly becoming more of a women’s compliment in america.(e.g. “Oh my god, Mary, your such a little slut!”)

The whole thing makes me realize just how silly are reaction to words can be, and how we can add meaning to them that may or may not be there.

      • Annika
        Annika

I’m a women and the best way that I can describe as to why “cunt” is such a horrible word to call a women is this:

When another women calls me a “Cunt” it doesn’t really sting, I just think she is stupid. However, when I get called a “cunt” by a man its makes me feel like the dirtiest thing in the world and I almost feel violated. If that makes any sense. Also there is no male equivalent bad word that you can call a guy back after he has called you that that would hurt his little feelings. Guys call each other horrible names all of the time and its usually because they are “asshole drinking buddies” or whatever.

      • Snuffa
        Snuffa

meh – this is not without logic, but I think you’re overthinking things. In Russia where I’m from, both male and female genitalia are used about equally as insults and arguably equivalents for “dick/balls” are even stronger insults. Does this automatically mean that the Russian culture has a deep-seated hatred of both sexes? (well, could be but…)

    • Ip
      Ip

In my part of the UK, or more accurately among my social circles, families, and friends, the c-word is referred to as that and is one of the worst things you can say or call someone. You don’t use that word unless you are really fucking serious.

      • Seph
        Seph

Whereas in Scotland (and especially in Glasgow where I live) it’s such an everyday part of slang vocabulary that it’s barely even obscene, and is a pretty mild insult when it’s even an insult at all. “Do any of you cunts want to get some chips,” wouldn’t be an out-of-place thing to say. There definitely seems to be a sharp divide in usage between here and England.

It’s not a word I like to hear, and it’s not a word I would ever say. I don’t like to see it written, and I don’t even want to type it. Maybe that’s me showing my age (I have children the same age as the characters in the comic); maybe it’s upbringing. I don’t know. For me, the ‘c’ word is very, very nasty indeed.

          • Matt
            Matt

Aha, personally it doesn’t bother me, but I know it can really offend some people. One girl slapped me round the face for saying it. I think it’s the intent behind the words rather than the words used. ‘B*tch’ and ‘f*aggot’ are used as terms of endearment by some of my friends, but if some stranger called me either of those, I’d be mad, but probably not as mad as when people I don’t know call me ‘sweetheart’ or ‘babe’.

    • Kamu Nappy

Cunt is misogynistic because of the context it is brought in and the root of the word. I personally love the word cunt and believe that it should be reclaimed because its origins are entirely positive. It comes from the goddess Cunti, a god from the Americas of Fertility and War if I recall correctly. It morphed to cunt when missionaries came and would call the people who worshipped Cunti cunts as a savage insult. It has mutated to the “nastier” word for vulva over the years and in our patriotic society recognizing a sexual organ associated with women is apparently the worst thing on the planet. To the guy who commented it is a double standard I’d like you to look at how much more comfortable everyone is with the word dick, penis even but the word vagina makes people feel gross because of the negative association with it and cunt, an inherently vulgar word, is deemed the worst swear in America at least because of the oppression that women go through daily just with the sexual organ associated with them.

      • Will
        Will

which by your definition, proves that there IS a double standard. Allowing Cunt, and Vagina to remain nasty is only proliferating an already nasty double standard put in place by ignorant people who’s views should be buried as quickly as possibly so their poisonous taint stops infecting the minds of the people.

        Just saying.

Lots of answers, not much clarity. Knowledge time!

“Dick” and “Asshole” aren’t as bad as “Cunt.” Why?

Moreover, “Pussy” denotes weakness but “dicks” are usually the person lording some minor power over another. Why?

When someone is whining, they’re “on the rag” or “Bitching.” Why?

There is gender bias in our words, and aversive behavior is quite possibly the most insidious way it perpetuates in our culture.

      • Rhov
        Rhov

Easy answer: social acceptance. “Nice” used to be an insult, originally meaning someone was foolish. That definition changed.
        “nice” = foolish -> fastidious -> dainty -> delightful

Similarly, “bitch” is going through a transformation. 20 years ago, if a man had called me a bitch, I would have gasped and slapped him. Then it got overused. Women stood up and took the meaning behind it as something positive: a woman who will bite back and fight like a dog! Now when men call me a bitch, I smirk and thank them, and my female friends might be called “my bitch pack” and meant as a compliment.

Dick used to be a huge insult. Then it got overused. What was a disgusting thing to call a man, degrading him to just a phallic item, became commonplace. “You’re a dick” does not mean “I think you are no better than your tiny male anatomy.” It means “You’re a jerk!” Cunt too is common in some countries, whereas in the US women still take offense. I do. But it’s because of the meaning, not the word origin. When I’m called a cunt by a American man, he’s likely calling me that because I am a woman and somehow that’s a shameful thing to be. I am not ashamed of being a woman and having a “cunt.” I am furious about his intent. But when my overseas friends call me a cunt, I hardly blink. I know the “intent” is not there. The power of the word loses meaning.

Nigger is a good example of this. If I’m angry at someone and call them a nigger, it is likely because something about their race/culture has upset me. But when I’m joking with my friend, I might call him “my nigger” and no malice or racist feelings exist. He often laughs and calls himself a nigger too.

Intent! Vulgar words are only powerful if there is intent behind them.

The gender bias isn’t that being a dick is less bad than being a cunt. It’s that “dick” means a jerk and “jerk” applies to all genders, but “cunt” in America still means “vagina.” It is used primarily by men who want to belittle a woman based solely on her gender.

They wanna be dicks, so they call us cunts. XD
If women turned the meaning around, like we have with “bitch,” then the bite of that 4-letter word vanishes.

    • Nate
      Nate

Here in upsidey downy land (Australia) I often greet my best friends with “S’up cunt?” There’s not a great deal of insult left in that word here I don’t think. If I’m REALLY upset with somebody I’ll nickname them Ankles (because it’s three feet lower than a cunt see hurr I’m clever)

    Why “cunt” is misogynist:
It’s an insult based on female genitalia. Much like “pussy”. It’s applied to men and women, but the insult is based on female genitalia, implying that female genitalia is somehow debasing and a Bad Thing To Be.
For people arguing about how people say “dick” all the time and isn’t that the same thing: “dick” isn’t the same because men are the privileged class. Although I personally stay away from using “dick” or “cock” as an insult too – using genitals as insults isn’t very cool either way.

…interesting. In my neck of the woods, ‘pussy’ refers to men exclusively (namely, men that are acting weak or pathetic in some way). Growing up as a girl, if someone had called me a pussy I would have cracked up laughing because I *can’t* be a pussy; I’m a girl.

Not arguing about the misogynist tones, mind; it definitely is that. Just find it interesting that where you live a woman can be called a pussy.

I just had a random(and slightly personal) thought. The hands grabbing at Jamie make me think of how I feel when I have flashbacks. Like there are people grabbing me and stuff. Even though Jamie was being a prick I definitely feel for him. I know how that stuff feels. It’s such a disgusting feeling. Hell just thinking about it makes me feel like puking. Anyways, that’s it for my random (and probably obvious) PTSD based observation.

I absolutely love Jamie – honestly, he’s probably my favorite character (Tom in close second). The first panel on this page is stunning, in my opinion. I love how everytime he thinks about his past or is scared or needs to express himself, you see the hands, or the mouth, or the tentacles. Adore this artwork!

My girlfriend was raised in a family where her mother emotionally and occasionally physically abused her and her twin sister. Now, we never really speak about it but this page made me realize that sometimes, hiding it makes it worse. You can pretend every things alright and that everything will be ok in the end, but in the end, its not and it wont be as long as that feeling is kept bottled up.

So, i just read the whole comic from start to finish. You are quite a wonderful storyteller as every panel seems completely *genuine*. Jamie is a character i (and i’m sure most) hated for a long time – i’m glad to see him being developed.

That first panel should be a poster.
(I mean it’s horrible, but it’s so beautiful and relatable.)
    Is that bad?

Tab, I just gotta say again that your characterization is spot on wrt Jamie’s emotional abuse by his mother. When I was his age I knew what I needed for me was to stand up to my mother and walk away, but I was as dedicated to standing by her beliefs then as Jaime is now. A lot of people portray people standing up to someone as a ‘I realized I should, so I did’ simple thing – and maybe it is for some people, but for a lot of teenagers it can be a long road from point A to point B. I’m glad that Jamie shows an awareness of it here – it’s very, very realistic.
