Annnnnd here is the sexism I always see gay men exhibit. “I’m not some WOMAN. THAT would be AWFUL, because dating women is AWFUL since they’re so whiny and delicate. I mean, isn’t that why we’re gay? Because who wants to date a WOMAN?!” Lovely. I’d hoped this comic would’ve managed to avoid this pitfall.
Yeah, the misogynistic nature of a lot of gay men is the reason I used to keep away from the gay scene. However I wouldn’t say it applies to this specific comment.
Here Mark is lashing out, the woman comment comes from his fear that Steve was having sex with him as a girlfriend substitute. It’s a bad comment and shows Mark’s ingrained sexism, but I never promised to make perfect characters.
1. Mark thinks Steve is straight. 2. A lot of straight guys seem to think gay men are “like women”, and a lot seem to think all gay men are whiny, prissy, possessive and clingy uber femme-boys. So yeah, uh, some gay men are going to say “I’m not a fucking woman, damn it”… not because women are horrible, but because they are guys and expect to be seen as men, not as “wannabe women”.
I’m a gay guy. I have women friends. :/ I don’t think women are horrible. I just hate when bigoted assholes think I should act like a femme woman or something because I’m gay. I’m a guy, so why would I want people to think that I want to be a woman? Are lesbians okay with people thinking they want to be men? It’s the same concept, only reversed.
If this was Nay going “I’m not some DUDE who wants to sit around in flannel guzzling beer, god damn it!” … would it be a problem?
The “the misogynistic nature of a lot of gay men”? What the hell? Most of my friends are girls and i’m gay, and i find its the same way for most gay men, these comments are offensive!
I said a lot of gay men, not all. Sexism in gay communities is something I found a lot when I first started hanging in those kind of circles, so I think it’s important to note that it does happen. It’s not that I believe that all gay men are sexist, or that you are, this is just how I experienced it.
There was a lot of misandry too, but now I look back I can see a lot of it stems from having a bunch of people who are very insecure about themselves lashing out at whatever is an easy target. In my experience teen queer youth groups can be quite horrible and divided. It’s good to hear that it’s not the case for you or your friends.
Well handled, oh reasonable and textually honest Tab! It takes guts to write honest characters who maintain their textual integrity, and I applaud you. Mostly, I applaud your reply comments.
I’m looking at this page completely differently now, I never reacted like that. I mean they’re teenage bezzies, they genuinely wouldn’t mince words. If Mark wanted to say: “I’m not your girlfriend, don’t feel obliged to treat me differently” He wouldn’t care if some people might hear: “I hate women grrr. Their brains are tiny grrrr.” If only because they know each other well enough not to misinterpret each other.
A tg person doesn’t want to be considered a gay version of their birth gender, and a gay person doesn’t want to be considered of the opposite gender. Sorted.

Anne, the thing is:
1. Mark thinks Steve is straight.
2. A lot of straight guys seem to think gay men are “like women”, and a lot seem to think all gay men are whiny, prissy, possessive and clingy uber femme-boys.
